FinFest

FinFest is an all-day internal technology education conference. Teams of consultants prepare presentations on new technologies and present them to the rest of the company. It is a fun way to learn a lot about technologies you are not using on your current project, and a nice opportunity to catch up with people from other offices if you have not seen them in a while.

Previous FinFest presentations include:

Cloud Computing with the Google App Engine

With the App Engine, Google introduces their take on the cloud computing movement. App Engine enables users to build web applications that utilize the same scalable network systems that power Google applications. The platform is designed to give developers the opportunity to concentrate exclusively on solution innovation and remove the headaches associated with infrastructure. This presentation offers a brief overview of development, deployment, and analytics using the App Engine.

Understanding REST-Based Services: Simple, Scalable, and Platform Independent

REST is an architectural style for web services that leverages the power of the internet to deliver simple, platform independent, and highly scalable services. This presentation explains REST-based services and identifies situations when REST will provide a better alternative to SOAP services. In addition, the presentation introduces the Microsoft ADO.NET Data Services product as an example of REST in the market.

Taking Control of Services with the Microsoft Managed Services Engine

Web services have become a globally accepted standard for application-to-application communication and the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) has made implementing services easier than ever. Despite these advances, organizations continue to struggle to understand what SOA is, much less how to approach it in a reliable, maintainable manner. The Microsoft Managed Services Engine (MSE) facilitates Enterprise SOA through service virtualization, allowing organizations deploy services faster, coordinate change management, and maximize the reuse of various service elements.

Find out how AppFuse consolidates open source solutions and ensures they work together; see how AppFuse can improve productivity and code quality. Also, explore how to build visually compelling Web 2.0 applications using a library included in AppFuse, Scriptaculous.

Best Practice Custom Development for SharePoint

SharePoint delivers tremendous capability to business users, but some developers struggle to implement repeatable processes for developing and deploying SharePoint custom solutions. This presentation will introduce best practices to simplify custom development with SharePoint Solutions and Features. Developers will learn how to leverage Solutions and Features to package functionality and quickly deploy business solutions to multiple environments, bringing SharePoint custom development into the best practice world.

The ADO.NET Entity Framework in the Real World

This presentation explores the core functionality of the Microsoft ADO.NET Entity Framework and its use against a real-life, imperfect data model. It covers the “what, why and how” of the Entity Framework so that technologists can decide when it makes sense as a tool and how to quickly implement it to improve development processes.

Model View Controller Framework for Application Development

The .NET version of the Model View Controller pattern provides a new approach for web application development. Using the MVC framework for web development introduces clear separation of concerns, improves UI testability, supports user-intuitive URLs, and provides developers with finer control over the HTML and JavaScript rendered to client browsers. This presentation introduces the MVC framework and discusses how it can be used to deliver a web application for the enterprise.
